Question: Does anyone go to garage sales anymore?
My family used to have garage sales in the 1970′s & 80′s and our front yard looked like St. Peter’s Square on Easter. I decided to have a sale again, after more years of accumulating. There’s some really nice stuff – antiques, artwork and all sorts of collectibles. I dropped a few hints at work and all I got, in effect, was “I already have too much junk now, thanks anyway!” I advertised in the Pennysaver and on Craig’s List. I live right on the main street in town and put out a big sign in the front yard – “ESTATE SALE.” Not one person stopped all weekend! What’s going on?

This question has been asked so many time here, but I will repeat my theories:

1) the bad economy – people need every cent they have now just to buy food and pay the rent/mortgage/fuel/car/loans, etc. They have no money for frills and unnecessary things that are at most garage sales.

2) everyone seems to be downsizing. Your co-workers are correct. You should have gotten the message from their comments.

3) tastes have changed. Years ago people were looking for antiques as accent pieces. Today older people are more conservative with their spending and young people want new stuff. They see antiques as just “old junk.”

4) Ebay. Online shopping has just about put the kibosh on garage sales. Why spend gas and time driving hither and yon when you can sit at a compuer and shop. The stuff will be delivered right to your home.

Question: What does “estate sale” imply as opposed to an average tag or garage sale?
After my mother passed, I put together some things from her house that I could bear to part with and advertised an estate sale. I set up some tables in the front living room and put these items on them. Bright and early, two 50-something women showed up, walked right past the items for sale and started pulling down pictures hanging in the wall and taking dishes and glassware out of the china cabinets. I told them the items for sale were in the front room on the tables. They said that they didn’t want that “junk” and asked if I was having an estate sale or not. I said it was an estate sale, but not everything in the house was for sale. One responded saying that if that were the case, it wasn’t really an estate sale and I shouldn’t have advertised it as such. So is it an estate sale if only certain items from an estate are offered?
I did look into having a dealer conduct the sale, but a consensus of their opinions was that the quantity and quality of the things I want to sell wouldn’t even cover their commission and associated miscellaneous fees. Most want a guaranteed $ 2500 out of a sale even after I take my percentage. This kinda puts the kibosh on having someone else do it.

Most people get the impression that everything in the house is up for sale and they were just helping themselves to what they found. I would not call it an estate sale the next time but a yard or garage sale to avoid any future confusion or confrontation. Just clearly mark any future items. Sorry for the loss of your Mom

Question: Should I advertise “estate sale” or just “garage sale”?
In the process of liquidating parent’s estate. After a bad experience with an auction service, I’ve decided to do this myself so I have some control over what happens. Last week, I had a sale of what I considered useful and collectible items and advertised it as an “estate” sale. While the turnout was good, I had several dust ups with people who made no secret that they were antique dealers. They were very critical of what I was selling and said that the stuff was just junk that you would see at any tag sale and that I should advertise it as a garage sale and not as an estate sale. I don’t think every sale has Fostoria glass or Red Wing pottery! What are they looking for – a Ming vase for 10 cents? A Chippendale sofa for a buck? I wanted to know if there is something implied in an “estate” sale like “priceless antiques”?

“Estate” does not mean “antique” sale. The dealers were mistaken and disrespectful. If it was an antiques sale, it would have been advertised as such.

Question: Yard sales, tag sales, “estate sales,” garage sales, etc., etc.?
Yard sales seem common in the u.s. due to the amount of excess stuff people collect…since the poorer people of egypt probably don’t have a lot of objects to resell, do those of the wealthy class have yard sales/they are pretty good in keeping what they need and want to a point where overstocking doesn’t occur as much? Or is a yard sale just not a phenomenon in egypt? Is it a cultural embarassment to participate in selling or buying at a yard sale? In general, people of all classes in the states have/buy stuff at yard sales sometimes–even people in multi-million dollar homes. The upper class just calls it by a different name, “estate sales.”
In case clarification is needed as to what my ? was although I had an obvious one in the question section w/ a question mark after the specific query…besides wondering whether the wealthy tend to hoard as much or not, my question alluded to what areas of egypt (rich or poor/perhaps there’s just a section of town) have the yard sales since I didn’t see ANY btwn. my excursions through hurghada, aswan, cairo/alex. doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist, therefore I ask…

could you tell me where a good place to start looking would be since those sales are amusing at times?

I don’t really see a question here, but if you’re asking if I take part in these types of activities, the answer is yes. I deal in antiques and collectibles, so much of what I sell is found at the sort of places you’ve just described.
